Chocolate Is at Stake

Talk of famine, disease, water scarcity, decreased biodiversity, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and increasing global temperature is scary and stuff, but it’s hard to get very worked up about. It’s all so large-scale and abstract, you know what I mean? I’m sure someone will sort it out. The government, maybe? Don’t they manage these things?

But when chocolate enters the conversation–specifically, the fact that climate change could devastate our ability to produce it–

WHOA. Did you just say CHOCOLATE is threatened?

Park the car and get me my bike.

Are you eating a banana? Do you know how much CO2 was released getting that here?

I think we can fit a couple windmills in my back yard.

Harper, Obama–what the hell, you guys? Are you for real about that pipeline? HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE CHOCOLATE?

Around 50% of the world’s cocoa supply is grown in two West African countries: Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. But a new report from the International Center for Tropical Agriculture predicts that between 2030 and 2050, the amount of land where cocoa can be produced will plummet.

Rising temperatures have already started to negatively affect cocoa production, while global demand is rising. The news report states “it’s not inconceivable” that cocoa prices could soon increase sharply.

It’s hard to get motivated about climate change just by thinking about the health and prosperity of future generations. I mean, they don’t even exist yet, am I right?

But, look–chocolate, you guys!

That’s it – we gotta trash our airliners and go back to dirigibles. Then we ban cars from inner cities. (Hey, I’ve spent a fair amount of time in NYC, and lived in Chicago, and cars are a MAJOR pain in the butt in both!) Then go back to sails for ships! :D
Hey, if CHOCOLATE is at risk, I’ll ride a horse and live in a tent! ;)

Oh gosh, we will be like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, taking one bite of our bar a day!! My dad will be devastated. As long as we don’t see oompaloompas, I say!
