Retired Republican Lambasts Republicans

Mike Lofgren retired as a Republican Congressman this summer, not only because he was disgusted by the GOP’s embrace of politics that are damaging to the US, but also because he was “contemptuous” of the Democrats’ lukewarm attempts to stop them.

Lofgren has written an intriguing piece about his experiences in American politics, but it’s highly instructive for residents of any country–especially mine, Canada, where many of the Republicans’ dirty political tactics have been adopted by the Canadian Conservative Party. Lofgren is eloquent and frank in his analysis, calling out the GOP for its toadying to its corporate masters, its thirst for war, its alienation of voters and its abuse of the law.

This is the passage that spoke to me most:

A couple of years ago, a Republican committee staff director told me candidly (and proudly) what the method was to all this obstruction and disruption. Should Republicans succeed in obstructing the Senate from doing its job, it would further lower Congress’s generic favorability rating among the American people. By sabotaging the reputation of an institution of government, the party that is programmatically against government would come out the relative winner.
