Putting Themselves on the Line for Humanity

08/22/2011

Sorry to follow a video with a video, but this one moved me too much not to post.

As I mentioned yesterday, in Washington private citizens–doctors, lawyers, teachers, students and more–are risking arrest in order to express their alarm about the planned construction of the Keystone tar sands pipeline. The pipeline would extend from Alberta to Texas, and it would transport some of the world’s dirtiest oil. Earlier this month a group of leading climate scientists sent a letter to Barack Obama urging him to block its construction, as it would have dire consequences for the climate. One of them, Jim Hansen, said tapping this source in a big way would essentially mean “game over”.

Tears came to my eyes as I watched this. These people are willing to risk incarceration in order to fight for our species’ ability to continue living on this planet. Even if their efforts fail, they can be at peace knowing they took a principled stand for survival.

They are challenging their society in an effort to fix it. That’s the spirit in which I started this blog. They are truly batshite, and I salute them.

UPDATE: Here is an informative article on the subject.

“Even if their efforts fail, they can be at peace knowing they took a principled stand for survival.” That is what it is all about. I am so grateful for these people, for all of them that were arrested, and I SO hope Obama noticed. This pipeline better not go through, I hope and wish that he vetos it, with every fibre of my being. I live in Alberta and am so disgusted with what is going on up there. Please America, don’t take our dirty oil.

That’s an honourable stance. If the pipeline doesn’t go through, our economy won’t be as strong as it might have been, in the short-term. But both the Canadian and global economy is based on nature and its resources, and if we pursue short-term goals at nature’s expense, the whole house of cards will come crashing down.
