Bruce Sterling on The New Decade

03/01/2011

This video is two years old, but still very relevant. It’s a 45-minute talk Bruce Sterling gave at the end of the 2009 Reboot conference in Copenhagen.

In it, he gives his projection of the 21st century’s second decade: “No money, scarcity, financial collapse, collapsed states, general precarity, an energy crisis, low intensity global warfare, and a rapidly advancing climate crisis.” In confronting these problems, he argues that hairshirt environmentalism alone will be inadequate–that in fact, its logic is potentially dangerous. Instead, we need to surround ourselves with quality tools and use them to develop innovative approaches.
